2017 November

Dear Friends

I am a massive fan of Christmas. A MASSIVE fan. I love everything about it. The lights, the food, the festivities and all of the traditions that my family share together. I even enjoy cooking Christmas lunch!! I love the opportunities that the ‘Christmas season’ brings too. The conversations it opens up, the possibilities there are to engage with people outside of the church and the potential to demonstrate God’s love and generosity.

Christmas is one of those unique times in the year where everyone is talking about Jesus. Quite literally, ‘Christ’ is on people’s lips. They might not know to whom they are referring, but, Jesus is being spoken of. As Christians we get to help the world recognise the God of whom they are talking but not always knowing. It’s a great time to share why we love Christmas, it’s importance to us and what the story means for real.

Some of the best conversations I’ve had with people have been during the Christmas season, it seems to lend itself to talking with people about Jesus. I’ve also found it’s a great time of year to personally invite people to faith based events, as there’s always so much going on. From carol services, to nativities, Christingle events to Christmas meals, ‘crafternoons’ to family fun days, there’s so much that the Church has to offer during this time of year and often it’s very easily accessible. As a family we’ve often found our friends outside of the church wanting to join us at Christmas based activities.

This November as a circuit we are going to be looking at how we can make the most of the Christmas season and how we can share our faith with others. The mission and ministry team will be running a pre-advent study called ‘Explore Advent’, with the aim of helping us to feel more confident in sharing our faith story during the advent season. The study will run for four weeks and will comprise of four sessions each focused on a different theme. We will be exploring the Christmas Story, how Christmas fits in to the wider story of God, the stories of our lives and the stories of others. In each session we will look at how we can practically talk and engage with others around the area we are focusing on.

Our hope is that we will all feel more equipped to talk to people about Christmas and our faith by the end of the study, as well as being able to invite them to the activities we are running throughout December.

We hope you will join us as we explore advent together. (Monday evenings, 7.30-9pm at St Marks, beginning on 6th November. Or Tuesday afternoons, 1.30-3pm at Formby, beginning on the 7th November.)

Have a very lovely November and enjoy the lead up to Christmas. In my opinion it really is ‘the most wonderful time of the year’.

Blessings

Hayley
